Number 6

After the Herald, I became weary of picking up the pieces that an automobile was shedding while constantly waiting for the next shoe to drop; after thinking things over decided to use a legacy to buy a vehicle that would be a lot less interesting. The result was a thoroughly boring car that served me well for over 100,000 miles with little to say about it.

The Renault 6 was, essentially, a spiffed-up body on the Renault 4 with a larger (1108cc) engine. It was very French, in the sense that it had a smooth ride and the body roll was alarming until you realized that it wasn't going to fall over. The gear shift lever was a hockey stick-shaped object that disappeared horizontally into the top of the dashboard.

My Renault on the Lleyn Peninsula in Wales. I was just about to find out that the grinding noise was worn brake pads wearing away the brake disks I fitted a tow-bar assembly and used this car to pull various things including my 16ft power boat, Dunking, which was pushing the 6's capabilities a tad, but it always came through.

A thoroughly excellent vehicle that has pleasantly little to write about. I drove it for many miles before I eventually succumbed to the call of the mild.
